Most of the time when you watch a fashion show it seems as if every designer is from some exotic country with the models to match. Although it is true that fashion designers come from all over the globe, there is also something to be said for American fashion designers, who have worked just as hard to carve out a niche for themselves in the global fashion market. If you want a taste of American fashion here are the Top 10 American Fashion Designers so that you can make sure you get the cream of the crop.

Top 10 American Fashion Designers

Oscar de la Renta

Born in the Dominican Republic, Oscar de la Renta has been a well known name in the fashion world. Even though many of his prominent designs were created in countries outside of America, his birthright is American.

Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs may be best known around the world for his creations alongside Louis Vuitton. However, Jacobs has created quite a few collection of his own, that are also worthy of note, his collections can be found in boutiques all over the world.

Donna Karan

Many people do not recognize the name Donna Karan, but they will recognize her initials in the fashion brand “DKNY.” Karan regularly still adds her input to the DKNY brand that she created and helped propel to mass popularity all over the world.

Calvin Klein

Calvin Klein has changed the focus of their company several times throughout its existence, but it seems that no matter where the company settles one thing remains the same, the company is as successful and well known as ever.

Vera Wang

When most people think Vera Wang they think wedding dresses, due to her popularity as the exclusive dress creator for many celebrities. Her most recent contributions to the fashion scene are a budget line created for department stores, whish are slightly more affordable for the mainstream fashion fans.

Kate Spade

Probably one of the youngest famous American designers, Spade is known for her handbags mostly, although she has spread her creative touch throughout the world of raincoats and accessories as well.

Ralph Lauren

When most people think of Ralph Lauren, they think of his elaborate Polo collection, but he has many other fashions that regularly make the international fashion runway. Within the US he has more than 45 boutique specialty stores.

Anna Sui

Sui is best known for her work in Japan, but she hails originally from America, and has had a successful boutique in LA for over ten years. Outside of clothing she also has a fragrance and shoe collection.

Bill Blass

Bill Blass has been a steady American designer for many years, even winning a lifetime achievement award near the end of the twentieth century. Although he has passed away, many of his designs still influence the fashion industry today.

Todd Oldham

Oldham primarily works with home designs, but made a well known contribution to the fashion world when he created a line of clothing that reflected the fashion of the Batman Forever movie.

Although the beginning of the 2000’s focused on baggy, hippy styled clothes, mixed with casual drags from AE, Abercrombie & Fitch, and tailored jeans; it is now time to get back in shape if you want to finish out the year of American Fashion in 2009.

While in the past you could hide in American oversized sweaters that reached down to the knees, this is no longer the case, so you had better get your body back into shape, in order to wear the newest and hottest in American Fashion in 2009.

Sharp, clean, tight clothes and body wear has been in style all of 2009, from tight leggings to skinny jeans, which apparently did not die in the eighties as many thought. Although bohemian is still somewhat hot, underneath fringed boots, peasant shirts, and tooled leather pieces are tight skinny jeans or leggings that are meant to show everything. The trend of tight bottoms continues through into those who want to take on the classic looks of the fifties that are coming back into style with the change of seasons.

As far as tops go, knitwear will be big in the later part of 2009 just as it was during the summer when light knit camis and tanks were extremely popular. Knitwear will carry through in cable sweaters in particular, as well as for classic business looks.

Undefined necklines are still in style and you can expect to see many American styles that have asymmetrical necklines as well as one shoulder necklines. The basic aim of all necklines is to bring sharp attention to well defined shoulders and the collarbone area. The upside is that with such an emphasis on the necklines, there will not be as strong of a focus on the waistline of tops.

Tartan prints are popular in 2009 and will continue to be throughout the end of the year in America, in both tulip skirts and trousers like those from the 80’s. Amusingly, while jeans have gone on the skinny side, it seems that trousers are only getting larger with flares at the bottom topping most of the designer clothing lines. On the topic of bottoms, fashion has moved away from the mini skirt, in favour of longer, at least knee length skirts, which show the shape of the body more.

Finally, when it comes to American Fashion in 2009 accessories, scarves and fur are definitely in this year. Jersey is the current style for scarves, which should be worn draped around the neck twice so longer, is always better if you can get your hands on one.

So far as coats go, this year is all about fur, despite PETA’s fervent attacks, so anything fur will do. Also in style this winter are white peacoats, dress coats, and any type of coat fabric that is full of rich colour and life instead of traditional browns and blacks.

Although the UK is found in close proximity to many of the most fashionable countries in the world, Brit’s still enjoy also indulging in American fashions from time to time. In fact, a few of the largest clothing chains in the United States are also some of the largest clothing chains in the UK, such as the Gap, Victoria’s Secret, DKNY, and Express.

Each of these stores has quite a large following in the UK due to the fact that they make fashion basics stylish and affordable, although in the UK they are closer to the high end of the price scale, since they are competing with established designer brands.

It is not just the chain outlets that have made it big in the UK however, as smaller designer labels that are featured within department stores and larger shopping centres such as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Nike, and Roca Wear have also gained a substantial following in the UK.

Outside of labels, certain fashion trends often pop up in the UK, although they are usually twisted somewhat to match the UK fashion sense. For example, in America bright colours are more fashionable, while in the UK yellow and orange are not as popular, and are considered to be slightly “off”, unless used as an accent.

One specific fashion trend that seems to be spreading fast across the UK is that of young men wearing their pants slung down over their boxers and upper part of their rears exposed. This trend was first sported by celebrity DJs and Prince William but has now spread throughout the young men in the UK.

In terms of basic style, in the United States the preppy school girl/guy look is more popular with the polo shirts and khaki bottoms, among both boys and girls. This is a trend that seems to stay consistent throughout any age.

However, as more American stores pop up in the UK, in particular those targeted at teens, such as Hollister, American Eagle, and Abercrombie and Fitch the preppy look is beginning to make its way into mainstream British fashion, although the prices at these stores also are usually higher than in their counterpart stores in America.

In the last decade American fashion and UK fashion have begun to replicate each other more and more, which is perhaps the result of expansion on both sides of the pond. However, the British still tend to preserve their classic sharp look, while the Americans are more comfortable in their clothing by nature, although slowly with the current generation of teenagers this is beginning to change. Thus, in the next few years it will be interesting to see what these upcoming groups of adults prefer to wear in terms of designer clothing.
