Although the beginning of the 2000’s focused on baggy, hippy styled clothes, mixed with casual drags from AE, Abercrombie & Fitch, and tailored jeans; it is now time to get back in shape if you want to finish out the year of American Fashion in 2009.

While in the past you could hide in American oversized sweaters that reached down to the knees, this is no longer the case, so you had better get your body back into shape, in order to wear the newest and hottest in American Fashion in 2009.

Sharp, clean, tight clothes and body wear has been in style all of 2009, from tight leggings to skinny jeans, which apparently did not die in the eighties as many thought. Although bohemian is still somewhat hot, underneath fringed boots, peasant shirts, and tooled leather pieces are tight skinny jeans or leggings that are meant to show everything. The trend of tight bottoms continues through into those who want to take on the classic looks of the fifties that are coming back into style with the change of seasons.

As far as tops go, knitwear will be big in the later part of 2009 just as it was during the summer when light knit camis and tanks were extremely popular. Knitwear will carry through in cable sweaters in particular, as well as for classic business looks.

Undefined necklines are still in style and you can expect to see many American styles that have asymmetrical necklines as well as one shoulder necklines. The basic aim of all necklines is to bring sharp attention to well defined shoulders and the collarbone area. The upside is that with such an emphasis on the necklines, there will not be as strong of a focus on the waistline of tops.

Tartan prints are popular in 2009 and will continue to be throughout the end of the year in America, in both tulip skirts and trousers like those from the 80’s. Amusingly, while jeans have gone on the skinny side, it seems that trousers are only getting larger with flares at the bottom topping most of the designer clothing lines. On the topic of bottoms, fashion has moved away from the mini skirt, in favour of longer, at least knee length skirts, which show the shape of the body more.

Finally, when it comes to American Fashion in 2009 accessories, scarves and fur are definitely in this year. Jersey is the current style for scarves, which should be worn draped around the neck twice so longer, is always better if you can get your hands on one.

So far as coats go, this year is all about fur, despite PETA’s fervent attacks, so anything fur will do. Also in style this winter are white peacoats, dress coats, and any type of coat fabric that is full of rich colour and life instead of traditional browns and blacks.
