Although the UK is found in close proximity to many of the most fashionable countries in the world, Brit’s still enjoy also indulging in American fashions from time to time. In fact, a few of the largest clothing chains in the United States are also some of the largest clothing chains in the UK, such as the Gap, Victoria’s Secret, DKNY, and Express.

Each of these stores has quite a large following in the UK due to the fact that they make fashion basics stylish and affordable, although in the UK they are closer to the high end of the price scale, since they are competing with established designer brands.

It is not just the chain outlets that have made it big in the UK however, as smaller designer labels that are featured within department stores and larger shopping centres such as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Nike, and Roca Wear have also gained a substantial following in the UK.

Outside of labels, certain fashion trends often pop up in the UK, although they are usually twisted somewhat to match the UK fashion sense. For example, in America bright colours are more fashionable, while in the UK yellow and orange are not as popular, and are considered to be slightly “off”, unless used as an accent.

One specific fashion trend that seems to be spreading fast across the UK is that of young men wearing their pants slung down over their boxers and upper part of their rears exposed. This trend was first sported by celebrity DJs and Prince William but has now spread throughout the young men in the UK.

In terms of basic style, in the United States the preppy school girl/guy look is more popular with the polo shirts and khaki bottoms, among both boys and girls. This is a trend that seems to stay consistent throughout any age.

However, as more American stores pop up in the UK, in particular those targeted at teens, such as Hollister, American Eagle, and Abercrombie and Fitch the preppy look is beginning to make its way into mainstream British fashion, although the prices at these stores also are usually higher than in their counterpart stores in America.

In the last decade American fashion and UK fashion have begun to replicate each other more and more, which is perhaps the result of expansion on both sides of the pond. However, the British still tend to preserve their classic sharp look, while the Americans are more comfortable in their clothing by nature, although slowly with the current generation of teenagers this is beginning to change. Thus, in the next few years it will be interesting to see what these upcoming groups of adults prefer to wear in terms of designer clothing.
